Our municipality is located in one of the most beautiful counties of Catalonia, the Baix Empordà, a land of contrasts in which we find a fertile plain offering all the colours of nature, a craggy coastline – the Costa Brava – which conceals bays and other marine treasures, towns and villages of long historical tradition and major tourist centres. Almost by way of natural frontier, the Montgrí mountain range presides over the zone, its silhouette forming, together with the Medes Islands, the symbol of the territory.
Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit are two towns with highly individual characteristics and yet full expressions of the Empordà. The first, six kilometres from the sea, has a very well preserved old quarter and can offer a wide spectrum of cultural activities; historically, it has been a major commercial and market centre for the villages and farming communities of the Baix Ter. L’Estartit, on the other hand, is a much more modern seaside town which has converted from living from fishing into one of the Costa Brava’s major services centres, in which visitors can engage in all kinds of nautical and underwater activities.
The municipal district of Torroella de Montgrí is one of the largest in the county and is striking for its geography, history and economic and social development. The cultural and leisure range on offer is broad and of high quality, as are the services we present to you in this guide, as indeed should be so with a go-ahead municipality that opts for sustainable tourist development, with careful management which renders economic development compatible with preservation of environmental values. |
